Typewriter
I inherited my great-grandfather’s typewriter. Icleaned it and got it mostly working. Everything works great except the “j” key will stick on me.
The machines is a big Royal KMM from the 1940s. It was a bug bite, that turned into purchasing another typewriter. This one is a Smith-Corona Silent from 1938. It is considered portable, but it hasits own suitcase to “port” it.
Vinyl records, physical books, typewriters, fountain pens, and an Apple Watch are the best way to understand me.
A blank page feels like they best place to start, but I find a blank page, empty notebook, or a empty schedule to be far more constraining that starting with something. Editing is so much easier than creating. However, our brains won’t let us do both at the same time. So, we have to resist the urge to edit while creating.A typewriter is a great way to fight the urge to edit while creating because their are only so many few ways to make corrections.
When facing a blank page, just start putting something down. Don’t overthink it, mark up the page and then get to pruning.
Where do I lock up and do nothing because I have too few constr constraints? Can I focus on the first draft before the first edit? Will I allow the mistakes to keep me from doing anything, or will I embrace them as part of the process?
Be curious, be kind, be whole, do good things.
